On Monday striker Gyan Asamoah who scored The ‘Black Stars’ winner in the round of 16 match against the USA in spectacular fashion, walked out of training with a swollen ankle, “my ankle is a bit swollen but I do not think it is too serious. I will be ready for Uruguay," he added re- assuring Ghanaian fans as he watched his team-mates practice with ice wrapped around the ankle.
There were doubts around the fitness of a host of other players which included Kevin Prince Boateng the scorer of Ghana’s first goal during the 2-1 win against the United States, who has been carrying around a hamstring problem.
The Ghana football association did clear the air saying that Boateng as well as defenders John Mensah and Samuel Inkoom have been cleared to play against Uruguay, the South Americans will be making their first appearance in the ¼ finals for the first time in 40 years. While Ghana are only the third African team to make it to the last eight in the history of the World Cup.
Ghana are boosted by the news that Isaac Vorsah the defender who plays his club football in Germany will be available for selection after recovering from an injury he picked up during ‘The Black Stars’ opening game victory against Serbia. With Free State Stars defender Jonathan Mensah missing the game through suspension it will come as a major relief for Ghana coach Milovan Rajevac to have Vorsah available for selection.
A concern though for Rajevac will be that his star performer Andre Ayew is also suspended for the game, Ayew the son of former Ghana international and African Footballer of the year Abedi Pele Ayew has been a revelation for ‘The Black Stars’. His absence though could see the return of the experienced Inter Milan player Sulley Muntari who has played a bit part role for Ghana so far, after being initially omitted from the starting eleven by Rajevac for disciplinary reasons.
