“Both teams had opportunities to steal it,” reflected coach Steve Komphela about the goalless draw between Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns. “It was the first match of the year and if you look at it, we take the point.”

The Amakhosi coach, however, did feel that, looking at the Absa Premiership log, that “we have been hard done by. We now have seven draws, that’s too many.”

Komphela pointed out that in many of these draws the opponent’s goalkeeper won the Man of the Match award for the many saves made during the game.

“Often the opponent’s goalkeeper was the difference between a win and a draw,” the coach commented. “On the other hand, it’s also a matter of composure on our side.”

Chiefs were clearly the better side on Saturday evening and the visitors must count themselves lucky to have left the FNB Stadium with a point in hand.

There was also a great vibe in the stadium with more than 36 000 spectators in attendance, most of them supporting the Amakhosi.

The home side’s goal of getting three points wasn’t helped when George Lebese had to leave the field with a groin problem inside five minutes of play. The speedy winger already scored five league goals (eight in total, including cup games) this season.

Komphela was positive about the young centre-back Lorenzo Gordinho, who won his second Man of the Match in a row. “The boy has talent and only through playing matches he can grow. However, it’s important for him to keep his feet on the ground, as they say: ‘Humility breads success’.”

Amakhosi next face Bloemfontein Celtic in an Absa Premiership fixture at the Free State Stadium on Sunday, 17 January (kick-off is at 15:30).
