Willard Katsande fondly remembers Kaizer Chiefs’ first match at home-away-from-home in the Cape of Love & Peace. Not only because the midfielder scored a crucial goal from the penalty spot to help Amakhosi beat Bidvest Wits 2-1, but above all because of the atmosphere at the Cape Town Stadium: “The supporters boosted our morale.”
A boost to the morale was certainly needed at the time as Chiefs lost the Telkom Knockout final only three days before the clash against the Clever Boys.
“We were amazed at how many fans turned up at the Cape Town Stadium for the Wits encounter in December,” Katsande adds. “It was awesome. This overwhelming support from our fans helped us to get the three points.”
The Zimbabwean hopes that even more supporters will attend Sunday’s encounter against Platinum Stars. This fixture will take place at the Cape Town Stadium (kick-off is at 15:30).
Amakhosi had the better of Dikwena in the first round of the Telkom Knockout, winning 3-1 thanks to goals from Erick Mathoho, Siphelele Mthembu and George Maluleka.
Chiefs are at present in fourth position on the Absa Premiership log with 25 points from 14 matches, while Platinum Stars are in sixth place on 20 points (although from 13 games).
“They have a good side,” Katsande comments about Sunday’s opponents in the Mother City. “They play with a very attacking philosophy, having good players upfront.”
The Glamour Boys want to decrease the present five-point margin with league log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns.
“With the support of the crowd we are looking at collecting the three points,” the 30-year-old midfielder confidently remarks. “We want to climb the ladder. We just need to follow the coach’s instructions.”
Tickets for the Platinum Stars match are sold at Computicket and Shoprite/Checkers at R60 for adults and R10 for children under the age of 12 (while stock lasts). Once the children’s tickets are finished, they will sell automatically at adult rate.
