Kaizer Chiefs                                    (0) 2 (Moon 47’, Castro 84’)

Baroka FC                                         (1) 1 (Nguzana 31’)

Kaizer Chiefs beat Baroka FC 2-1 in an Absa Premiership match at New Peter Mokaba Stadium, despite having been a man down from the 74th minute. Amakhosi’s goals were scored by Ryan Moon and Leonardo Castro, who came on as a substitute to make his debut as a Glamour Boy.

George Maluleka returned to the starting XI after not having participated in last week’s 2-1 win over Polokwane City due to suspension. He replaced Wiseman Meyiwa to partner Willard Katsande in the centre of midfield. Otherwise, the side stayed the same.

New was the recently-signed Colombian striker Leonardo Castro who joined the matchday squad for the first time, albeit on the bench, after having received his work permit.

The game started at a good pace, despite the scorching heat in Polokwane. Chiefs tried to dominate from the word go, having most of the ball possession, but Baroka certainly came out to play positive soccer as well.

The first real chance in the match fell for the home side when Robin Ngalande’s shot at goal resulted in an excellent save from Itumeleng Khune.

Amakhosi did well defensively, with the centre-back trio of Erick Mathoho, Daniel Cardoso and Teenage Hadebe keeping it tight.

Meanwhile, Gustavo Páez was again making some fine runs up-front, ably supported by Ryan Moon, even though they didn’t get many qualities balls to work with.

Baroka got a few corners, but they mostly didn’t result in much danger.

Chiefs, on the other hand, seemed to have a good counter-attack going with Joseph Molongoane on the ball and Páez about to sprint behind Baroka’s defence, before he was knocked down by what looked like Matone Kgoetyane’s elbow. The Baroka defender was somewhat lucky to be able to stay on the pitch with referee Chris Harrison opting for the yellow card.

It was eventually the home side that scored the opening goal in the 31st minute. Talent Chawaphiwa’s shot at goal landed on the upright after which the ball bounced back into the field, only to be slotted in by Lucky Nguzana, 1-0.

There was an opportunity for Moon to head in the equaliser just before the break, after a well-weighted cross from Maluleka, but the ball flew wide off goal.

Chiefs started the second half like a house on fire, already scoring the equaliser in the 47th minute. Siphiwe Tshabalala put the ball into the goalmouth from the right with Moon excellently heading the ball past Baroka’s goalkeeper, 1-1. It was the young striker’s second goal in as many games.

Thereafter, the Glamour Boys went for the winner, even though the flow of the match was somewhat disrupted at first by four substitutions in the space of eight minutes (55’ to 63’), two from Baroka and two from Chiefs. Coach Steve Komphela brought on Siphelele Ntshangase for Tshabalala.and Dumsani Zuma for Páez.

Under loud cheers of ‘Castro, Castro, Castro’, Leonardo Castro was brought on in the 69th minute for Moon. It meant the debut of the Colombian striker wearing the Gold and Black jersey.

There was a set-back for Chiefs in the 74th minute when ‘Tight’ Molangoane seemed to react to Khutso Mohwatseleng clapping his head with his hand, with an elbow and this resulted in a red-card. It means that ‘Tight’ will miss next week’s crucial league clash against Mamelodi Sundowns.

Castro nearly scored Chiefs’ second in the 79th minute after a fine cross from the right by Zuma. The Colombian’s header, however, unfortunately flew past the wrong side of the post.

Five minutes later, however, Castro netted the winner. Ntshangase passed the ball sideways and the Colombian finished neatly with a firm left-footed shot, 2-1. It was a fantastic debut for the striker.

It was a well-deserved win for Chiefs, who controlled most of the game and fought hard to overturn the 1-0 deficit at half-time.

Key moment in the match:

That must have been the moment that new recruit Leonardo Castro entered the pitch in the 69th minute. The Colombian nearly scored with a header not long after coming on, but he did find the back of the net in the 84th minute.

Most Valuable Player (MVP):

Daniel Cardoso again marshalled his defence well and substitute Leonardo Castro might also have had an outright shot at the award, as he looked threatening whenever in possession of the ball, but it was eventually Willard Katsande who was selected as the Absa Premiership Man of the Match. The Zimbabwean, as usual, fought hard in midfield, winning numerous balls. It was a sterling performance of Katsande.
