The report was presented by Mafikeng Marketing Partnership Initiative chairman Charles Ndabeni to Vodacom Challenge committee members Kaizer Motaung and Irvin Khoza at a function in Mafikeng on Friday night, as Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates, and Congolese clubs in defending champions FC Lupopo and TP Mazembe prepare for this year’s Vodacom Challenge first leg matches at the Mmabatho stadium, near Mafikeng on Sunday.
The report highlighted key findings stating that R3 892 000 was spent by consumers on transport related to the 2002 Vodacom Challenge, with more than 3 500 minibus taxis and buses present at the stadium on the day of the matches.
Food, refreshment and local entertainment, as well as hawkers and liquor outlets brought about an estimated spend by consumers of R3 960 000, while a further R240 000 went the way of the accommodation industry.
The balance of the estimated R16,5 million figure was generated through gate takings at the Mmabatho stadium on the day of the Vodacom Challenge first leg matches last year.
“Mafikeng has the perfect event infrastructure within a 5km radius which allows the town to meet the criteria of hosting top class sports and entertainment, arts and culture events, which plays an essential part towards the revival of the economy of Mafikeng,” said Ndabeni.
