Character and courage needed - Zwane

Amakhosi assistant coach Arthur Zwane, a veteran of a number of Cup finals for the club during a decade long playing career, says he will use his own experiences in championship games to help guide the team in the build up to Saturday’s eagerly awaited Telkom Knockout Cup Final where Chiefs will be up against their Soweto rivals Orlando Pirates.

Zwane who featured for Chiefs when they last played Pirates in a Cup final back during the 2005 - 2006 Absa Cup final, believes that the Amakhosi can take a lot of lessons out of that game which was played in driving rain in Durban on the 20th of May 2006.

“Pirates dominated us all afternoon long during the 2005 - 2006 Absa Cup final, what can we take out of that game I believe many lessons.

It shows that if you have chances as Pirates did make you have to make them count so that you take control of the game, in a Cup final if you do not finish off the opposition when you have it can be very costly.

Also despite being under pressure we played with great character and courage, history will show whenever I have played against Pirates they have always dominated us in the early exchanges, winning is more than that it is about being composed and confident.”

According to Zwane all that matters to him is that Chiefs pick up their first piece of silverware of the season on Saturday evening, “people always remember the winner of the cup final, in 05-06 we went to Durban given no chance of defeating Pirates.

Despite being dominated we still won the game. That is what is in the record books show that we won the trophy, to me it is not just about dominating but adopting a winning at all costs approach.”

In concluding Zwane further added that like it was during his time as a player he believes that the experienced members of the team need lead from the front to ensure Chiefs are successful in the Cup Final.

“There are players in this team like Jimmy Tau and Tinashe Nengomasha who have played in many Cup Finals, they have those experiences to draw on and they also possess the know how to help lead the team come through what will be a very tough and challenging game.”
