“It is time to record our first win at home,” Steve Komphela says ahead of Saturday night’s match against Golden Arrows. “Winning at home is crucial. Two of our wins so far came on the road. We enjoyed that, but charity begins at home… We must win our home games, starting tonight.”
Amakhosi go into the clash against top of the table Abafana Bes’thende chasing their first home win of the season. “Arrows are riding the crest of the wave at the moment,” observes Komphela. “They are on a roll and they look enterprising.”
Last season, the Glamour Boys played to a one-all draw at home against Arrows at FNB Stadium. Ryan Moon scored the opening goal in the 77th minute. It was his first wearing the Gold and Black jersey. The visitors, however, equalised in the final seconds of the game.
“The tough schedule continues,” adds Komphela, “with two more games to go in September. We are getting on with it, and taking it one game at a time. We didn’t have much time to prepare for this match, but we are professionals and will adapt - where there’s a will, there’s a way. We must wrap-up the month of September by winning our next two matches, which are both at home.”
Amakhosi need a win tonight to draw level with Arrows on 11 points. Both teams have played five league matches.
Gustavo Páez, meanwhile, shows good early form, having already netted three times in five league games. The Venezuelan striker is accompanied by Arrows’ duo of Lerato Lamola and Kudakwashe Mahachi at the top of the PSL’s Top Scorers chart.
“Arrows’ strike force is dangerous,” analyses Komphela. “However, we have a plan to counter their threats. We have our tactics in place and maybe we can even spring a surprise as we did recently with the introduction of a few youngsters in our line-up. It’s good to see that Gustavo is catching fire, looking sharp and troublesome for the opponents.”
