Kaizer Chiefs advanced to the next stage of the CAF Confederation Cup following a 5-2 win on aggregate over Zanzibar’s Zimamoto.
Amakhosi lost the second leg preliminary round fixture 2-1 in Amaan Stadium on Tuesday afternoon. Lebogang Manyama scored in the 50th minute for the Glamour Boys, while Zimamoto scored through two penalties, which both looked given a bit too easily.
Drama unfolded in the 60th minute when Ryan Moon thought he had scored a tap-in after Bernard Parker’s had provided him with a beautifully weighted through-ball. Parker got caught after releasing the ball with the referee seemingly giving advantage after which Moon scored. Surprisingly, it was only then that the referee decided to disallow the goal and instead give a free-kick outside the box.
Chiefs were the better side on the day but could not convert their dominance into a win.
Coach Giovanni Solinas was left fuming, “We also wanted to win this leg second. Watch the footage and you’ll see that the penalties awarded to them were not convincing. We are glad to go through to the next stage though.”
Amakhosi’s substitutes came in the form of Siyabonga Ngezana for Erick Mathoho, who sustained an ankle injury, while Dumsani Zuma and Kabelo Mahlasela came on respectively for Ryan Moon and Hendrick Ekstein.
Chiefs won the first leg 4-0, which took place in Port Elizabeth last week, with Khama Billiat netting a hat-trick and Kabelo Mahlasela adding a goal as well.
At the end, Chiefs progress and now wait for their next opponent to play the first leg first round match of the CAF Confederation Cup in the weekend 14/15/16 December.
