Kaizer Chiefs caused a major upset when they beat the star duded Mamelodi Sundowns 5-4 on penalties in the second final played in front of a packed Mmabatho Stadium. Gerald Sibeko gave Amakhosi a lead in the fifth minute but Mamelodi Sundowns equalised via Surprise Moriri’s penalty in the 43rd minute. The game went to penalties after 90 minutes of regulation time.

Chiefs were the first one to draw blood when Gerald Sibeko’s free-kick inside the 18 area gave Amakhosi a deserving lead in the fifth minute. This was following a superb run on the left by Thuso Phala. Brian Baloyi was then forced to dive low saving Mokete Tsotetsi’s shot following a sublime free-kick from a scintillating Arthur Zwane. The veteran winger together with Thuso Phala were a constant threat to Sundowns defence in the first half. With Chiefs taking their foot off the paddle Mamelodi Sundowns came close with OJ Mabizela’s header sailing over the bar.

Emille Baron pulled a brilliant save denying Sibusiso Zuma as the Brazilians searched for an equaliser. With Kaizer Chiefs defence under pressure, Sundowns earned a penalty when Gordon Gilbert was misjudged to have handled the ball. Surprise Moriri stepped up earning an equaliser for the Sundowns at the 43rd minute. The teams went to half-time 1 all.

Amakhosi coach, Muhsin Ertugral rang changes in the beginning of second stanza taking out Arthur Zwane and Gert Schalkwyk bringinging youngsters, George Lebese and Sandile Zuke. The changes nearly paid dividends but striker Thuso Phala ballooned his shot. Sundowns substitute, Katlego Mpela came off the post after a good work from Keketso Mmotong. Then, they should have scored a minute later when Daniel Monteiro’s strike goes narrowly wide after the striker found the ball inside the area unmarked.

Emille Baron pulled a save of the match when he denied skipper, Mbulelo Mabizela who had won a free header from a corner kick.
