Kaizer Chiefs beat Maritzburg United 4-2 on penalties in a Telkom Knockout Last 16 match at the FNB Stadium on Saturday evening. The match ended in a goalless draw after extra time. It means that Amakhosi progress to the quarterfinal of the Telkom Knockout competition.
Erick Mathoho returned to Kaizer Chiefs’ line-up after missing last weekend’s 2-0 win over Ajax Cape Town due to a family bereavement, while Lucky Baloyi replaced the suspended George Maluleka, who received his marching orders against the Urban Warriors.
Maritzburg lost earlier this season 2-0 to Amakhosi at the FNB Stadium in a league clash. The visitors, however, didn’t come to Johannesburg to lose again, showing intent to go forward whenever having the opportunity to do so.
To be fair, the Team of Choice had the better first half, even having a good shout at a penalty in the 18th minute when Kgotso Moleko touched the ball with his hand in his own box.
On the other hand, the first goalscoring opportunity of the game came Chiefs’ way when Michelle Katsvairo snatched the ball from Bevan Fransman, before going one-on-one with the Maritzburg goalkeeper. But the Zimbabwean striker failed to hit the target.
The Team of Choice got a few more chances in the first half, the best of which came in the 34th minute when Denis Weidlich’s shot hit the sidebar.
Amakhosi, meanwhile, came out of the dressing room with more intent to go forward in the second half. It resulted in an early chance for George Lebese in the 51st minute, but his shot went past the wrong side of the goalpost.
Maritzburg, however, continued to go forward whenever getting the opportunity.
The game was more or less evenly balanced, even though the visitors had most of the ball possession.
Coach Steve Komphela started to ring the changes in the 61th minute, bringing on Lewis Macha for Katsvairo.
Another opportunity to score the game’s opener came Maritzburg’s way in the 66th minute, when again Weidlich gave Khune some work to do, which the goalkeeper did well, punching the ball over the goal.
The game had to be stopped for a while when the lights went off at the FNB Stadium. It coincided with a huge thunderstorm. Eventually, however, the match continued.
As no goals were scored during the full 90 minutes, the match went into extra time. The rain, meanwhile, continued.
The extra time was relatively quiet, when it comes to goalscoring chances, although Khune did need to make another excellent save in the 109th minute after a well-placed shot from Kurt Lentjies.
In the end, penalties had to decide which team would go to the next round.
Chiefs were by far the better team from the spot, with Willard Katsande, George Lebese, Lorenzo Gordinho and Keagan Buchanan all finding the back of the net, while Maritzburg missed two. As a result of this, Amakhosi go through to the quarterfinal of the Telkom Knockout.
The Glamour Boys next face Orlando Pirates away at the FNB Stadium on Saturday, 29 October 2016 (kick-off is at 15:30).
