Kaizer Chiefs beat Wits University 2-1 at the Johannesburg Stadium on Wednesday night only for this victory to be rendered academic by Orlando Pirates' 3-0 defeat of Ajax Cape Town in Springs.

The Glamour Boys led 1-0 at half time.

Although Amakhosi won, they battled for the better part of the game, especially in defence where they were error-prone and could have been severely punished had the Wits strikeforce been sharper.

However, it was Muhsin Ertugral's side that showed their intentions from the onset with Tony Ilodigwe almost giving them the lead after just 25 seconds.

But the Nigerian striker delayed with the ball inside the box and

when he decided to shoot, the Wits defence blocked him.

Then on three minutes Siyabonga Nomvete beat the offside trap but

had to watch in dismay as his shot crahsed against the inside of

the upright and back into play with Rowen Fernandez well beaten.

They took the lead through Sibusiso Sithole on 25 minutes.

The national under-20 midfielder punished a defensive blunder by

Henry McKop and rifled a low shot past Fernandez.

Wits levelled four minutes into the second half through half-time

substitute Manqoba Ngwenya, who tapped in a loose ball in a

goalmouth scramble.

Thabo Mooki ensured a Chiefs victory on 65 minutes when he headed

in an Arthur Zwane corner kick.
