Kaizer Chiefs crashed out of the CAF Champions League despite a 2-0 win over AS Vita in their third tier, second leg match at FNB Stadium on Saturday night.
AS Vita progressed into the Group stages of CAF Champions League 3-2 on aggregate.
Chiefs were made to pay for their poor defending and wasted opportunities in the first leg in the DRC a week ago when they lost 3-0 despite having numerous scoring chances.
It was pretty much the same at FNB on Saturday night as the Amakhosi dominated proceedings, their defence being a lot better, but they wasted chance after chance in front of goal, and they were left further frustrated by some woeful refereeing.
It was the perfect start to the match for Chiefs with Knowledge Musona scoring the opening goal on the night in the eighth minute thanks to a clinical finish.
Musona should have doubled the lead in the 12th minute, but the Zimbabwean failed to beat Nguemba Lmboto from six-yards out after being played in by Siphiwe Tshabalala.
Benard Parker was also guilty of wasting chances in front of goal with his closest effort coming just before the break when he fired inches wide from the edge of the box.
The second 45 saw Chiefs continue to dominate and Kingston Nkhatha came close to scoring in the 56th minute when he met a cross with a powerful header, but he saw his attempt brilliantly saved.
Five minutes later the AS Vita keeper was at his best, this time denying Matthew Rusike from the edge of the box with an acrobatic stop.
Chiefs should have been given a penalty in the 65th minute when an AS Vita player handled the ball inside the box, but the referee waved away the Amakhosi player’s appeals. In the same sequence of action Morgan Gould also struck the crossbar from close range.
Gould did find the back of the net with a thunderous volley from the edge of the box in the 92nd minute to make it 2-0, but it was too little too late as the Amakhosi lost 3-2 on aggregate over the two legs.
Chiefs will now go into the CAF Confederations Cup group stages.
