Kaizer Chiefs Under-17 side came from a goal down to beat their counterparts, Bidvest Wits in a closely contested final of Engen U-17 Championship in Johannesburg on Sunday.

Tshegofatso Ramabu and Tshepiso Nkabinde scored the all important goals for the young Amakhosi to complete what has been a successful tournament for the Doctor Khumalo-coached team.

Chiefs who were in Group A, did very well to shrug off challenge from Markspark Rangers, Ekurhuleni Sports Academy and Wits Juniors in the round robin stage while they beat neighbours, Moroka Swallows on their way to the finals.

Coach Khumalo was pleased with the performance of his charges in the Gauteng leg of the tournament, “The boys once more did not disappoint and carried the instructions with aplomb.”

It was not about winning for us but preparing players for the senior team. Our boys know that every time they step into the field, they play to win. I am therefore very proud of them,” said the visibly delighted Khumalo speaking to kaizerchiefs.com on Sunday night.

“I was impressed with the standard of the tournament and teams like SuperSport United, Orlando Pirates, Bidvest Wits and Moroka Swallows were always going to be favourites to win the tournament.”

Popularly known as “16-V” during his playing days, Khumalo paid a glowing tribute to striker Eto who was voted as both Player and Striker of the Tournament, “He has tremendous potential as a striker. I have no doubt that we have a gem in him.”

We will be working hard to polish some of the areas he needs to improve on but credit really should go to all the players for playing well in this tournament.”
