Kaizer Chiefs 3 (Tshabalala 9, 77, Nahayo 58)
Maritzburg United 1 (Davids 70)
A brace from Siphiwe Tshabalala and another goal from Valery Nahayo ensured that the Glamour Boys keep their home record intact.
Vladimir Vermezovic looked to maintain a 100% record at FNB in 2011 with Tshabalala, Reneilwe Letsholonyane returning to the starting line up while Stanton Lewis was handed his first start since joining Amakhosi earlier this month.
At the back, Dominic “Domza” Isaacs returned in the heart of the defence alongside towering defender, Valery Nahayo.
The move paid dividends as the Glamour Boys got off a flying start with Tshabalala announcing his come back with a well taken goal as early as the 9th minute.
Maritzburg United goalkeeper, Shuaib Walters was made to work in the 21st minute pulling a superb save to deny Stanton Lewis his first goal for the Club.
In the 30th minute, Kurt Lentjies watched his well taken shot going just wide of Itumeleng Khune’s goals.
With the hosts taking the foot off the paddle, Maritzburg United continued to rally forward and referee, Daniel Bennet awarded them a penalty in the 32nd minute. Rudolf Bester stepped up but Itumeleng Khune pulled a superb save.
He was again at his best as he denied his former teammate, Gert Schalkwyk with another spectacular save.
In the 58th minute Valery Nahayo playing his best football this season grabbed a second one for the Glamour Boys as he rose the highest to head in Tshalalala’s corner kick.
Against the run of play, Maritzburg United pulled a goal back when Itumeleng Khune failed to get a grip on the ball allowing substitute, Fudlu Davids to score from close range to make it 2-1 in the 70th minute.
Seven minutes later, Tshabalala completed his brace with a goal of the night following a brilliant run to beat Walters.
Letsholonyane should have scored the fourth one on the day but watched his well taken curler coming off the post as Chiefs closed on log leaders, Orlando Pirates.
The Glamour Boys travel to Durban on Wednesday for an appointment with Golden Arrows and Vermezovic should be happy that the team managed to keep their home record intact in 2011.
