It is rather ironic that on a weekend where South Africa has celebrated Heritage Day it will be concluded with a cup semi-final between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates two of the country’s best supported clubs and teams who have played their part in contributing to the history of football in South Africa.

When Chiefs and Pirates meet most of South Africa is divided, this enticing second leg semi-final bout has been the talk around the braai, in taxis, buses and trains all week long.

The tie is delicately poised after the first leg a fortnight ago which ended 1-1. While Chiefs might have the comfort of an away goal, Amakhosi coach Vladimir Vermezovic has been quick to dispel any ideas that Chiefs will be happy to defend the current scoreline and will be aiming to continue playing in the same offensive vein that they have over the past few matches.

Recent media reports had suggested that Pirates will be looking to exploit Chiefs weakness although Buccaneers coach Ruud Krol has refused to divulge publicly what they are, he did say that there were really no secrets between the teams.

Krol has also stated that the advantage lies with Chiefs as they have that vital away goal and that a draw with lots of goals will suit him fine.

Going into the game neither team has any major injuries to contend with and both will be at close to full strength for the encounter which will add to the intensity of the occasion, in addition a number of individual duels bound to come about during the game.

Knowledge Musona, Chiefs goal scorer in the first leg will be looking to add to his seasons tally of goals which thus far stands on four.

Since the inception of the PSL Chiefs and Pirates have clashed in Cup games excluding this tie on six occasions with the Amakhosi having won four games while Pirates have been successful in two of those.

Their last meeting in this competition came nine years ago when it was known as the BP Top Eight.

Kenny Niemach scored the only goal as Chiefs defeated Pirates 1-0 to reach the 2001 – 2002 BP Top 8 Final.
