The game started with good exchanges between Bernard Parker, George Lebese and Tsepo Masilela. Chiefs were first to threaten through Masilela's forays on the left.

Kurt Lentjies opened the scoring in the 9th minute for United following a blunder by Chiefs' back row.

Siphiwe Tshabalala, Lebese and David Zulu followed with attempts at goal. Tshabalala saw his effort hitting the side net while Lebese shot wide with Zulu's effort being blocked.

Chiefs were caught on the counter on several occasions while on the other end, Virgil Vries kept the Chiefs strikers at bay as they ran riot in search of an equalizer.

Confusion at the back took place once again when Willard Katsande tried to pass to Masilela causing an unnecessary corner. The corner resulted in United doubling the lead through Tamsanqa Teyise's header. Halftime was score 0 - 2.

Wounded Chiefs returned with a vengeance in the second half with Lebese triggering a great come back with a neatly taken header at resumption.

Zulu and Tshabalala caused Maritzburg to panic with Zulu’s attempt hitting the upright and eventually cleared. Katsande stalwart in the middle missed tackles one after another resulting in a caution by middleman Zolile Mthetho.

Parker scored with a grass cutter, shaving the upright for Vries to collect in back of the net. Chiefs continued to pile the pressure and few taps in the box ended with Lebese completing his brace of goals 3-2.

Siboniso Gaxa limped off the pitch and was replaced by Kgotso Moleko in the 74th.

Maritzburg went for an equalizer and Siyanda Xulu under pressure headed into his own goals to give Maritzburg an equalizer against the run of play.

3 - 3 90min score.

Xulu made amends with a well taken acrobatic kick to send the crowd into rapture.

Sensing a win Komphela brought in Lorenzo Gordinho for Zulu to defend the lead.

Hendrick Ekstein came in for Lebese and the nimble footed player wrapped up the proceedings with goal No 5 for the Glamour Boys.
