This was confirmed by Premier Soccer League CEO, Kjetil Siem, at the launch and last 32 draw of the Nedbank Cup held in Sandton this evening.
Siem made the announcement to a packed audience who turned up to see who will battle it out in the round of Last 32.
The Nedbank Cup continues to grab the headlines as South Africa’s premier Cup competition.
Last year’s final between Moroka Swallows and Pretoria University was also a historic day as it marked the re-opening of the historic Rand Stadium.
But eighty thousand lucky supporters will get the opportunity of a life time when they take up their seats for the Nedbank Cup final on the 22nd of May 2010.
“The Nedbank Cup is the last competition we have to show the world that we can in fact successfully host the biggest sporting event in the world,” said Siem.
“And there’s no better way to showcase our product to the world by playing the Nedbank Cup in the same venue that will host the World Cup almost seven weeks later.”
“I’m confident we will pull it off and mark the final countdown to the world cup in spectacular fashion as well as being part of a special moment in the history of South African” Siem added.
‘This year more than any other soccer has demonstrated its ability to make a difference in the lives of countries, societies and communities and it is this ability to make things happen that first attracted Nedbank to the green fields of soccer. Nedbank is passionately committed to making a positive contribution to people in the communities in which we operate and the positive impact of the Nedbank Cup was felt from day one,” says Ciko Thomas, Nedbank Group Executive, Marketing, Communications and Corporate Affairs.
The PSL and Nedbank will continue to commit itself to using the Nedbank Cup as test matches for some of the newly built world cup venues.
Prize money on offer for the winners is a remarkable six million rand plus a spot in the CAF Confederations Cup.
Tickets for the 2010 Nedbank Cup Final will go on sale at the end of April.
