Kaizer Chiefs lost 1-0 to Jomo Cosmos in an Absa Premiership match at the FNB Stadium on Tuesday evening. As in recent games, Amakhosi were dominating ball possession, but it didn’t result in a goal.

William Twala and Ivan Bukenya started against Ezenkosi, replacing respectively George Maluleka and Willard Katsande in comparison to Saturday’s loss to Ivory Coast’s Asec Mimosas. The Zimbabwean midfielder sat out a one-game suspension after having collected four yellow cards.

Chiefs tried to put Cosmos under pressure from the word go, which resulted in a few chances.

Especially Twala was a real livewire during the first half, continuously posing a threat to the visitor’s defence. He even had two fine opportunities to score the game’s opener, but it wasn’t to be.

Ezenkosi, on the other hand, mostly sat back, looking for a counter, which never really came.

There was another chance for Camaldine Abraw in the 38th minute, but a Cosmos defender was alert and blocked the shot.

Bernard Parker also did well up-front, working hard and supplying around some nice passes. Lucky Baloyi, meanwhile, was doing another fine job in midfield, combining defensive work with offensive movements.

However, the first half finished as it started, goalless.

The second half was more or less the same as the first, with Chiefs dominating possession. There were some good opportunities to score, one of them was a shot from substitute Hendrick Ekstein at goal. But the ball failed to find the back of the net.

Then, out of nowhere, Cosmos scored via a long range shot in the 85th minute from the edge of the box thanks to Mxolisi Macuphu. It was probably the first attempt at goal from the visitors in the second half.

Chiefs tried to come back, but it wasn’t to be. Things are simply not going Amakhosi’s way at the moment, despite usually dominating play. It happens in soccer.

Amakhosi now face a difficult away game against Ivory Coast’s Asec Mimosas in the second leg of the CAF Champions League first round on Sunday, 20 March. The Glamour Boys lost the first leg 1-0 at home, even though they were clearly the better side.
