Kaizer Chiefs                              0

Bloemfontein Celtic            (1) 1 (Mabena 23’)

Kaizer Chiefs were edged 1-0 by Bloemfontein Celtic in an Absa Premiership match at Polokwane’s Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday night. The sole goal was scored by Celtic’s Ndumiso Mabena.

Coach Ernst Middendorp made a few changes to the starting line-up compared to the draw against Golden Arrows on Tuesday.

Bruce Bvuma was back in goal, but Khama Billiat was still out due to a slight injury. Kabelo Mahlasela, however, had recovered from his foot injury and was back in the starting XI.

It was a difficult first half. Chiefs might have had most of the ball possession, but it didn’t result in many goalscoring opportunities.

Ramahlwe Mphahlele worked hard on the right wing, going up and down the flank, while Mahlasela looked threatening whenever in possession of the ball.

Daniel Cardoso, meanwhile, did well in defence, although there was nothing he could do about the free-kick Celtic got in the 23rd minute.

Mabena kicked the ball to the left of goalkeeper Bvuma into the back of the net, 1-0 to the home side.

That was also the half-time score.

The Chiefs coach decided to make some changes at the start of the second half, bringing on Siphosakhe Ntiya-Ntiya for Lorenzo Gordinho and Dax Andrianarimanana for Philani Zulu.

Amakhosi pushed hard to get the equaliser in the second half.

There was an opportunity when Mphahlele delivered an excellent ball from the right side towards Dumsani Zuma, but the Celtic goalkeeper made a good save diving to his left.

The German coach made another substitution in the 75th minute, bringing on Siphelele Ntshangase for Willard Katsande.

Chiefs continued to push for the goal but didn’t get it in the end. It meant that Chiefs lost 1-0 to Celtic.

Key moment in the match:

That was the moment Ndumiso Mabena netted the 1-0 in the first half.

Most Valuable Player (MVP):

Dumsani Zuma did well in the first half when it came to attacking movements, while Ramahlwe Mphahlele had a fine game on the right wing. However, it was Bloemfontein Celtic’s Bongani Sam who was selected as the Man of the Match.

What it means:

It means that Kaizer Chiefs have collected 38 points from 28 matches, still being in seventh position on the Absa Premiership log.
