Kaizer Chiefs (0) 1 (Parker 90’ + 5)
Mamelodi Sundowns (0) 2 (Brockie 53’, Zwane 90’+2)
Chiefs missed out on lifting the inaugural Shell Helix Ultra Cup as they were edged 2-1 by Sundowns at FNB Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Amakhosi dominated much of the play but conceded two goals against the run of play before substitute, Bernard Parker headed in an added time consolation goal.
There was an early scare when Gaston Sirino had a clear shot at goal in the 3rd minute but shot wide. Sundowns quickly threatened again when Thapelo Morena blasted over in the 5th minute but it would be the last time Sundowns would pose a threat for the remainder of the half.
Loud cheers rang through the stadium for Khama Billiat in the 8th minute, as he made a mesmerizing run from within his own half, only to be brought down at the edge of the box but the referee did not award a free-kick. That was not to be the last of Billiat as he constantly posed a threat for his former side down the right flank.
Billiat duly followed up with the pressure as he slid through a low cross in the 18th minute, after a quick throw-in allowed him space on the right flank, but none of his teammates in the box reacted quickly enough to slot home.
Chiefs had a golden opportunity to take the lead going into the break after Castro had released Tshabalala on the left wing who sent in a low cross to the far post which found an unmarked Billiat, who shot straight at Kennedy Mweene.
Clad in regal purple, Chiefs strolled onto the field for the second half in a change of attire as they sported the new away kit. Billiat again was the danger man as he picked up the ball in midfield in the 49th minute, carried it past three defenders and for his low shot to be blocked. Gustavo Páez had an opportunity moments later but fired his shot wide.
Against the run of play, Jeremy Brockie tapped in from close range in the 53rd minute after an Anthony Laffor shot had struck the upright.
Chiefs looked for an immediate response when a Tshabalala inswinger expertly found the head of Castro, only for Mweene to make the save. Chiefs kept piling on the attacks as Mphahlele played a 61st minute pass into the six-yard box, only for a goalmouth scramble to end unfavourably. An acrobatic attempt by Castro followed in the 63rd minute but the shot lacked power as Mweene saved comfortably.
Mathoho had an opportunity to equalize in the 71st minute as he suavely controlled a Tshabalala free-kick only to blast over with his second touch.
The match was effectively over as a contest when Sundowns capitalized on a misplaced pass in midfield as Themba Zwane was played in and netted from close-range across Khune’s goal in the second minute of added time.
Bernard Parker salvaged something from this match in the fifth minute of added time as he rose highest to score from a corner. Chiefs attacked until the referee’s final whistle as Sundowns nicked victory in the inaugural Shell Helix Cup.
Key moment in the match:
Billiat’s explosive run from midfield after the early Sundowns attacks brought the crowd to their feet for the first time. From that point onwards, he spurred his teammates to take the game to Sundowns as the Glamour Boys put in a spirited performance.
Most Valuable Player (MVP):
Billiat made life difficult for his former side as he an ever present thorn in the Sundowns side as he dazzled with his silky skills and commandeering presence. He made incisive runs from the right flank and created numerous goal scoring opportunities for teammates as he was awarded man of the match.
