The game was of little significance to the champions but Wits needed a win to secure a place in the African club competition. However, the Students could only muster a draw, which was not enough to help them achieve their ambition, as they finished fourth.
It was a good result for Chiefs who finished the season with only three defeats. The home side had also given new players a chance to shine on the night with only four regulars on the starting line-up.
The majority of the supporters had stayed away due to extremely cold conditions but under different circumstance the Soccer City would have been filled to capacity. Those who braved the chill were never disappointed, as they were treated to an exciting brand of football in the first half.
The Amakhosi technical staff made drastic changes with the majority of the players who led the team to championship victory either on the bench or not considered at all. Those given a run did not dissapoint.
Chiefs utility player Derrick Spencer, one of the few regulars on the starting line-up, gave a man-of-the-match performance as he won almost every tackle. However, the former Hellenic star appeared stretched at some stages being the only defending midfielder. He was later joined by Player of the Season finalist, Tinashe Nengomasha, to stabilise the midfield.
Striker Kaizer Motaung Jr put Chiefs in the lead on five minutes after collecting a brilliant through-ball from defender Isaac Mabotsa. Motaung Jr, who had up to this stage only featured twice as a substitute, did well under pressure from the Wits defence to chip the ball over the advancing goalkeeper Wayne Roberts. He had another bite at goal on 27 minutes but Roberts was alert to the threat.
Wits showed that they were not just at Soccer City to add the numbers. If anything, the visitors appeared intent on spoiling the championship celebration party.
Sipho Mngomezulu found himself with ample space on the left just after the half hour mark following a great delivery from skipper Charles Yohane but instead, he fired way above the posts.
The Students pressed on and finally got the equaliser on 35 minutes through Yohane, who fired home a shot that had deflected off the upright. Bafana Bafana midfielder Mhlongo did the damage coming from the right as the Chiefs defence struggled to clear the ball tha bounced off the upright.
Chiefs should have reclaimed the lead on 39 minutes following a great combination between Mzizi and Motaung to set Sibeko up for a goal, but Roberts was quick to react in closing down the space. On 65 minutes he missed a good cross from Khanye on the left then a minute later he hoofed his header wide off target with Khanye still the provider.
Second half substitute Sbusiso Dlamini twice missed an opportunity to increase the lead within four minutes after coming on.
