The draw for the semifinals of the King’s Super Cup was held last night at the Royal Swazi Spa Convention Centre in Mbabane, Swaziland. Kaizer Chiefs will face Mbabane Swallows, while Orlando Pirates drew Swazi league champions Royal Leopards. The tournament will take place on Saturday, July 18. The final will be held on the same day.
It will be for the first time that these two Soweto giants will meet each other outside South Africa.
Mbabane Swallows finished second in the Swazi league last season, with Royal Leopards being the winners.
Chiefs’ opponent won the league title five times since the club’s foundation in 1948: 1993, 2005, 2009, 2012 and 2013.
The tickets for the game have not gone on sale as yet, but the general tickets will probably go for R250 with those for the VIP costing R500 each. There will also be fan parks set-up in Swaziland to watch the game on a big screen.
The King’s Super Cup is an initiative of Swaziland’s King Mswati III. “The No 1 football supporter in this country,” as one guest said it.
“This tournament is about love & peace and unity,” Amakhosi’s Football Manager Bobby Motaung told the audience yesterday night, which was packed with ministers, including Swaziland’s Deputy Prime Minister, soccer administrators and other dignitaries.
“It also reconfirms our relationship with Swaziland through soccer,” added Motaung. “It’s about bringing people together.”
Swaziland’s Minister of Sports, Culture and Youth Affairs, David Ngcamphalala, thanked the Soweto giants for their participation in the King’s Super Cup. He also had some advice for the Swazi teams: “Please care that the South African clubs get thrashed.”
Meanwhile, Swaziland’s Deputy Prime Minister Paul Dlamini stressed that the tournament will be an opportunity “to showcase the beauty of our country and the hospitality of our people.”
The trophy for the King’s Super Cup was also unveiled, with the winner going home with R1 million.
The match between Chiefs and Swallows will kick-off at 9:00 on Saturday morning, 18 July. The Pirates-Leopards clash will be played at 11:00, with the finally probably being held at 15:00. The games will take place at the Somhlolo National Stadium in Lobamba, which is between Mbabane and Manzini.
