Chiefs led 1-0 at the break.
Ironically Chiefs last win was against Rangers at Ellis park in Johannesburg last year.
The home side's performance on the night was probably best summed up by the Chiefs supporters as they chanted "Sebethithieele" -- they're out of ideas -- in anticipation of their team's third victory in succession over Rangers this season.
Chiefs though may have been a little lucky not to end up with a draw as their second goal -- a penalty awarded by referee Harry Lekitlane --seemed somewhat dubious.
Rangers had the better of the exchanges in the first half as they had the visitors' defence working overtime in the opening half hour. forcing three corners in the process.
However it was Chiefs who took the lead in the 41st minute when Josias Macamo curled a long ball from a set piece on the left which found Marco Mthembu on the far right who blasted the ball into the roof of the net.
Chiefs confidence soared in the second half with Stanton Fredericks forcing Rangers goal keeper Orwin Castel to make a spectacular save in the 47th minute.
Rangers should have equalised in the 59th minute when Ishmael Maluleke had Rowan Fernandez well beaten but somehow the ball hit the bar -- much to Chiefs' great relief.
It was nine minutes later when referee Lekitlane saw something that not many did when he awarded Chiefs a penalty when in fact it appeared that Rangers defender Nkiphitheni Matombo had been the victim of a foul.
Patrick Mabebi stepped up to make it 2-0 for Chiefs.
Almost immediately after the incident Matombo limped off the field and Reagan Stuart came in as his replacement.
Rangers pulled one back with three minutes remaining through substitute Samuel Baloyi but it was too little too late The names of two Rangers players found their way into the referee's black book.
Matombo was booked in 12th minute for a foul on Macamo and three minutes before the break, captain on the night Gilbert Mushangazhike was also yellow carded.
For Chiefs Cyril Nzama was booked in the 26th minute for fouling Mushangazhike.
