Up first for the Chiefs U-17s in the round-robin group stage of the 11th edition of the Future Champions International Tournament will be Club Brugge. The Belgians will be looking to defend their Future Champions International crown won in the 2018 edition.
The next encounter sees the young Glamour Boys come up against Beijing Sinobo Guoan FC, a Chinese football club that currently participates in the Chinese Super League.
The clash against Club Brugge will be on Monday, 25 March at 16:30. Less than 24 hours later, Chiefs will take on Beijing Sinobo Guoan. On Wednesday 27 March at 14:30 they will clash with FC Spartak Moscow with the aim of sealing a passage through to the semi-final.
The top teams in each pool, there are four groups, will advance to the semi-finals. The remaining eight sides will play-off to determine positions five to 12.
Amakhosi’s Under-17s, under the tutelage of Youth Development Academy coach Ace Khuse, qualified for the tournament as group winners from their participation in the Future Champions Gauteng Cup. Chiefs eventually finished third.
During the qualifying tournament played at WJ Clemments Stadium in Reiger Park, Chiefs’ U-17s started off by seeing off Jomo Cosmos 1-0. They then played to 1-1 and 0-0 draws against Reshegofaditswe Secondary School and SAFA Tshwane respectively.
In their semi-final, Amakhosi narrowly lost 1-0 to arch-rivals Orlando Pirates, whose goal came via a penalty.
It went down to third place playoff where Amakhosi overcame a resilient Highlands Park 3-2 on penalties after the teams played to 0-0 stalemate. The performances earned Chiefs a return to the Future Champions International Tournament after a three-year absence.
The week-long Under-17s tournament, hosted at Nike Football Centre, starts on Monday, 25 March, and the final will take place on Saturday, 30 March.
