Kaizer Chiefs beat Golden Arrows 2-0 in an Absa Premiership match at Durban’s Moses Mabhida Stadium on Wednesday evening. Bernard Parker scored the opener, while Siphiwe Tshabalala added the second. It was a fine performance from the Glamour Boys.

Emmanuel Letlotlo got his first start in an official Chiefs match, partnering Parker upfront.

Amakhosi had the better start, having the majority of the ball possession and trying to put pressure on the home side’s defence.

Joseph Molangoane was lively again, making threatening runs with and without the ball, while Parker seems to have gone back in time since his goal against Polokwane City on Sunday, playing with enthusiasm and full of energy.

And it was Parker who scored in 29th minute, heading the ball past the Arrows goalkeeper after an excellent cross from the right by Ramahlwe Mphahlele.

Arrows, on the other hand, never threatened goalkeeper Brilliant Khuzwayo in the first half.

The Glamour Boys continued the second half like they had done in the first 45 minutes, playing positively and looking for the second goal.

The visitors nearly scored the second when Parker rounded Nkosingiphile Gumede just outside the box, but, accordingly, was brought down by the Arrows goalie. Gumede was lucky not to be sent off by referee Thabo Ndzandzeka.

Coach Steve Komphela started to ring the changes in the 59th minute, bringing on the tricky winger Edmore Chirambadare for Letlotlo.

Arrows started to play better the longer the second half progressed, even getting a few goalscoring opportunities. Khuzwayo, however, continued his excellent run of form, making some fine saves.

Siphiwe Tshabalala looked set to extend Chiefs’ lead in the 74th minute, but his header from close range missed the target.

But ‘Shabba’ made up for his mistake five minutes later, when Molangoane delivered a perfect cross from the right into the box with the Amakhosi veteran powerfully heading the ball into the back of the net.

Chiefs played well and fully deserved the three points.

Molangoane was selected as the Man of the Match after another good performance. The skilful made his first start in Sunday’s 3-2 win over Polokwane City, playing well and scoring his first Chiefs goal, and was again a handful for the opponents’ defenders against Arrows.

Amakhosi are now in third position on the Absa Premiership log, having collected 24 points from 15 matches.

The league will only resume in February after the Africa Cup of Nations. Chiefs will host Free State Stars at FNB Stadium on Tuesday, 7 February (kick-off is at 19:30).
