The Glamour Boys suffered their first league defeat of the season and their second in a space of four days when they lost to SuperSport United 1-0 at Super Stadium in Tshwane.
Siyabonga Nkosi rose the highest to head in the only goal of the match in the 23rd minute.
The Amakhosi were hoping to stage a comeback following the MTN8 defeat in the hands of Ajax Cape Town last weekend.
Vladimir Vermezovic gave Thela Ngobeni his league debut in the absence of injured Itumeleng Khune and the U-20 national goalkeeper made his presence felt when he denied Daine Klate who only had a goalkeeper to beat after being superbly set up by Anthony Laffor.
There was no denying SuperSport United though in the 23rd minute as they grabbed an opener via a header by Siyabonga Nkosi. This was following a superb cross from Daine Klate. The hosts continued to pile pressure on the visitors, Kaizer Chiefs and came close grabbing the second goal of the match when Siyabonga Nkosi’s deflected shot came off the upright.
Abia Nale who was Chiefs’ most industrious player on the night did well at the 38th minute to set up for Kaizer Motaung Jr who miscued the shot, 1-0 to SuperSport at half time.
The Pretoria side continued with their search for the second goal of the evening when Glen Salmon forced Thela Ngobeni to pull a spectacular save in the 52nd minute.
In the 58th minute the Amakhosi came close to scoring an equaliser when captain, Tinashe Nengomasha did well to send a superb cross but Motaung Jr’s shot went over the bar.
The Glamour Boys made a double substitution when another debutant of the night, Mthokozisi Yende and Kaizer Motaung Jr were replaced by David Mathebula and young sensation, Knowledge Musona.
Dennis Onyango denied Chiefs in the 88th minute when he parried away David Mathebula’s free kick in the 88th minute.
Kaizer Chiefs fans continued with their unwarranted behaviour when they booed some members of the team something that has incensed the Management in the past couple of weeks. The Club will appear in front of the Premier Soccer League Disciplinary Committee on Wednesday following the fans behaviour in the MTN8 semi final against Ajax Cape Town at Newlands last Saturday.
On the field though the Glamour Boys will be hoping to regain the form they showed during the preseason when they welcome Ajax Cape Town at Orlando Stadium for the second leg of the MTN8.
