Kaizer Chiefs beat Mpumalanga Black Aces 2-1 in the Telkom Knockout quarterfinal at Nelspruit’s Mbombela Stadium on Saturday evening. Camaldine Abraw scored the opener, while Erick Mathoho netted the second. AmaZayoni countered with a goal in the second half.
Amakhosi coach Steve Komphela made a few changes to the starting line-up compared to the last league match against Jomo Cosmos. Itumeleng Khune and George Lebese came back into the team, relegating Reyaad Pieterse and Bernard Parker to the bench.
Meanwhile, Lucky Baloyi replaced the suspended Willard Katsande, who had collected four bookings.
Chiefs had a brilliant start, scoring the opening goal already in the third minute when Abraw hit a sitter from just outside the box, 1-0. It was the Togolese’s first goal in the Gold and Black.
Black Aces tried to come back thereafter, creating a few chances to score. The best came in the 16th minute when Collins Mbesuma hit the crossbar from inside the box.
The visitors, however, controlled most of the second part of the first half. The second goal arrived in the 24th minute when Mathoho towered high above his opponents to head the ball into the back of the net, 2-0.
Chiefs dominated the midfield, with Baloyi doing well in the holding midfield role in the absence of Katsande.
Black Aces tried to come back in the second half, but it was Chiefs looked more to score.
Siboniso Gaxa got an opportunity to add another goal, after an excellent run into the box, but he failed to find the target.
Abraw was lively upfront, playing probably his best game so far wearing the Chiefs jersey, while Edward Manqele also did well.
The Togolese striker got another opportunity in the 67th minute, but he failed to find the target from slightly to the left of goal.
And just when Chiefs thought the game was over, Black Aces scored a goal via Sibusiso Masina in the 79th minute.
In the end, Chiefs were simply the better team on the day.
It was a good overall performance from the Amakhosi, fully deserving the win.
Baloyi was selected as the Man of the Match in his first start for Chiefs in an official game since returning from Moroka Swallows.
The draw for the Telkom Knockout semifinal will be done on Sunday afternoon.
