Despite creating a number of goal scoring chances Golden Arrows and Kaizer Chiefs played to a 0-0 draw when the two sides met in an Absa Premiership match at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Wednesday night.

The scoreline could’ve been different had it not been for the goalkeepers who were on top form on the night.

Both sides showed their intentions early in the game with George Lebese forcing a great save from Nkosiphile Gumede with a volleyed shot in the 4th minute, while Philani Shange saw his shot blocked by Itumeleng Khune at the other end moments later.

Three minute later former Kaizer Chiefs player Siyabonga Nkosi came close to netting the opening goal with a brilliant curled shot that seemed to be heading for the top right corner, but Khune pulled off a great save to tip the ball over the crossbar.

Musa Bilankulu should’ve put the home side ahead in the 22nd minute when a Dillon Sheppard freekick found him unmarked in the centre of the penalty area, but the central defender sent his header wide of goal.

Arrows were almost punished for that miss a minute later when Abia Nale used his pace on the right before playing the ball across towards Mandla Masango, but his attempt produced a good reflex save from Gumede.

Then in the 25th minute Dillon Sheppard received a cross from Elrio Van Heerden on the edge of the penalty area, but the left winger shot straight at Khune when he could’ve picked his spot on either side.

Arrows goalkeeper goalkeeper Gumede almost committed a blunder in the 29th minute when he misjudged a long kick from Khune which bounced awkwardly just in front of him, but the youngster was able to pushed the ball wide to concede a corner.

Both sides finished the half strongly and in the 39th minute Shange released Nkosi on the right and he managed to chip the ball over the approaching Khune, but the ball sailed harmlessly across the goalmouth with no Arrows players to finish.

Masango had the last chance of the half when he fired a shot from range, but yet again Gumede was equal to the task as the two sides went into the break with the deadlock still intact.

Muhsin Ertugral’s men came close to taking the lead five minutes after the break when Sheppard played a great ball through the middle to find Mbesuma, but the Zambian international’s shot crashed against the upright.

Nale continued to torment his former side and in the 55th minute his cross from the left was flicked on by Majoro, only for Lucky Baloyi to blast his shot over the crossbar, while Masango saw his shot blocked at the near post by Gumede five minutes later.

Then in the 63rd minute Khune was involved in a clash of heads incident with substitute Thamsanqa Gabuza when he came out to punch a dangerous cross, and the goalkeeper was unable to recover and had to be replaced by Arthur Bartman after a lengthy stoppage.

The delay affected the momentum of both teams as they started to give away possession cheaply after the restart and also resorted to wayward shots from range.

Substitute Katlego Mashego came close to stealing the game for the home side in added time after receiving a cross from Thamsanqa Gabuza on the edge of the penalty area but his shot was tipped over the crossbar by Bartman.

The result sees Kaizer Chiefs failing to move up from 4th position on the log, while Golden Arrows also remain in 12th place.
