But despite no goals, it was an entertaining match, and especially the second half produced a lot of chances for both sides.

Amakhosi went into this match having lost their previous three encounters against the Students, and were eager to get back their superiority.

But for most it was a dull affair, as while Chiefs were probing, Wits packed their defence and midfield as they looked not to lose, rather than play to win.

It was a game that was contested in midfield, and the congested midfield made for little attractive football. There were no real chances in a first half that saw both clubs guilty of some rough tackles.

Wits lost forward Ivan Winstanley early on, and his replacement, Nick Koutsoudis was never really able to make a great impact, the youngsters making his top class debut.

The introduction of Jabu Pule in the second half brought some life to Chiefs, and Amakhosi were able to open Wits up, Pule contributing a lot with his great skill.

In the 63rd minute Sibusiso Dlamini forced Wits goalkeeper Wayne Roberts to make a great save, the Swazi international was right through but Roberts spread himself well to block the shot. From the rebound, Pule’s shot had little power and the chance was wasted.

Barely a minute later, Chief threatened again, this time another substitute coming close.

With his first touch, Junior Khanye, who replaced Rene Richards drove a powerful shot that was well tipped over by Roberts.

Wits had one chance, but captain Charles Yohane was unable to get his shot past Rowen Fernandez in the Chiefs goal.

Two minutes from the end Pule was at it again, this time the little maestro drove a low, long range drive at Roberts. However, the goalkeeper dived to his left to palm the ball away for a corner.

In injury time, Wits should have won the match, but Gift Mngomezulu hesitated with only Fernandez to beat, and the chance was wasted.
