Chiefs in Rangers hunt
Chiefs in Rangers hunt

It will most certainly be a case of the student up against the teacher when Manning Rangers host Kaizer Chiefs in a Castle Premiership fixture at the Kings Park Soccer Stadium in Durban on Sunday at 4pm.

When Doctor Khumalo was still playing for Bafana Bafana, the man that was always able to get the most out of him was then Bafana Bafana coach Clive Barker.

Now, Barker is in charge of Rangers, while Khumalo is in the Chiefs hotseat, and when the two sides clash on Sunday, the sparks are bound to fly.

Amazingly, since the inception of the Premier Soccer League (PSL) in 1996/97, Rangers have not yet been able to beat Chiefs in the league.

Though, there is a first time for everything, and with Barker’s great motivational skills, anything could happen. Khumalo knows that it will be a tough one.

"Rangers are always tough, they are side that you have to be on your guard against all the time. At the moment they are playing well, and we expect them to come at us,” Khumalo said.

"Their danger men will definitely be Gilbert Mushangazike and Alton Meiring, and we will have our work cut out because they will come at us. But we are used to playing top teams, and will be ready for what they to throw at us."

Khumalo was not sure if star midfielder Thabo Mooki would be ready for the match. "But we will have something unusual in store for Rangers when we meet them on Sunday. Wily Rangers coach, Barker, would not say much but knows that it will be tough, and that his side is capable of winning.

"I am sure that they will come at us, but if we take the right approach we could shock them. I don’t care what happened in the past, all that matters is Sunday, and Rangers will be ready for Chiefs,” he said.

While Barker will be counting on the form of Mushangazikhe, Khumalo will be hoping that David Radebe and Kabamba Musasa will add to their growing goal tally.
