Ajax Cape Town booked their place in the quarterfinals of the Absa Cup competition when they beat Kaizer Chiefs 5-4 in a penalty shootout after a hard-fought game at Newlands in Cape Town on Sunday.

The unlucky Chiefs player who had his shot saved by Ajax keeper Moeneeb Josephs was Fabian McCarthy who otherwise had an excellent

game.

The successful penalty takers for Chiefs were Patrick Mabedi, Stanton Fredericks, David Radebe and Cyril Nzama.

Brent Carelse, Alfred Phiri, Yanga Gcilisha, Bradley August and

Josep Ngake converted all their penalties for the jubilant Ajax.

Chiefs were the more dangerous in extra time - this influenced by the presence of Jabu Pule, who came on in the 75th minute to a rousing welcome by the crowd.

Pule had a foot in a breath-taking moment for Chiefs in the 108th minute when Radebe collected and broke the Ajax defence.

Josephs blocked his shot and the ball returned to Radebe, but this

time he was over-eager and shot wide.

Both goalkeepers were kept busy in the stalemate before extra time.
