The former great stars of the Amakhosi, Teenage Dladla, Lucky Staliano, Bricks Modau and Yster Sekwane were guests of honour together with club spokesperson and Communications Manager, Putco Mafani. The event was organised by the SAPS under the ongoing campaign of the provincial office of the Department of Safety and Security to hold rallies educating young people and targeting schools, preaching the dangers of substance abuse and the evils of drug trafficking.
Delivering a talk at a packed sport complex Mafani said it was in the social responsibility agenda of his club to teach and preach to young people about the dangers of substance abuse.
"It is true that the future is in the hands of the youth. We need to stand together and form a very strong unit of leaders of tomorrow that will lead football in years to come. When we host World Cup 2010, it will be some of you sitting here that will be at the helm of sports leadership, but we can only do this if we develop sober habits and a clean culture among the young people of Orange Farm, Gauteng and the whole of South Africa," said Mafani.
Asked about the importance of the presence of legends in a rally of this nature, former defender Lucky Staliano said: “To teach young people about reaching goals in life, the fulfillment of a dream to reach the stars is possible, only if we keep our eyes focused on good things in life, such as education, healthy social habits and lots of exercise. Anything is possible if we believe.”
Agents of the department of safety and security, volunteers from the United Nations Drug Control and Crime prevention, together with the officers of SANCA distributed pamphlets and flyers containing valuable information on the subject of drug abuse. Lundi of the traditional gospel fame thrilled the audience with his rendition of the church’s most famous chorus accompanied by a local choir founded by veteran SABC newsreader Linda Gromfa.
The Amakhosi legends took turns presenting trophies to the schools who won various sporting codes championships. They posed for pictures with delighted members of the community and signed autographs for all in attendance.
Kaizer Chiefs will be looking at some of the proposals forwarded by government for involvement with road-shows of the educational nature to teach the youth on the dangers of drug abuse.
