“This is very special,” former Kaizer Chiefs’ centre-back Jackie Masike reacted upon hearing the massive applause nine Amakhosi legends received at halftime during the match against Mpumalanga Black Aces.
Masike played for Chiefs in the 1970s and he was part of the first team that started playing games after the club was founded on 7 January 1970, nearly 45 years ago.
Masike was joined on the pitch at the FNB Stadium by other Amakhosi legends like Ryder Mofokeng, ‘Sputla’ Nhlapo, Abel Shongwe, Wellington Manyathi, Gardner Seale, Ntsie Maphike, Lucky Stylianou and JC Xaba.
The spontaneous applause the legends got from the enthusiast crowd shows again that the Amakhosi supporters know their players, past and present.
“It has been a long time since people cheered me on like this,” Masike said with a big smile on his face. “I can’t express my words of thanks to our supporters. They really are the best in the world!”
Chiefs beat Aces 1-0 with Erick Mathoho being selected as the Man of the Match. “I agree with that decision,” commented Amakhosi’s original centre-back Masike about the present one. “Mathoho was outstanding.”
