The Kaizer Chiefs Legends lost 1-0 to the Orlando Pirates Legends in a match that featured as a curtain raiser ahead of the Absa Premiership fixture between the two sides at the FNB Stadium.
Amakhosi had a formidable line-up including the likes of Doctor Khumalo, Ace Khuse, Brian Baloyi, Cyril Nzama, Arthur Zwane and Stanton Fredericks.
It was hot and that resulted in the pace of the game already slowing down after about ten minutes of play.
Still, the class of the former Chiefs stars could still be clearly recognised. Patrick Mabedi and Fabian McCarthy were strong in the centre of defence, while both wing-backs, Nzama and Nhlanhla Kubheka were full of energy, going forward whenever having the opportunity to do so.
Fredericks was lively in midfield and MacDonald ‘Scooter’ Mukansi showed that he’s still genuinely fast.
Meanwhile, Doctor Khumalo was being Doctor Khumalo, showing his skill whenever in possession of the ball. It was a pity, however, that he had to leave the pitch after about 30 minutes, as he had to do television work ahead of the main game.
Chiefs dominated the first half, getting various goal scoring opportunities, but they failed to get the ball past the Pirates goalkeeper.
The Buccaneers did better in the second half and that resulted in a goal from Joseph Ngake.
Amakhosi also got a few chances to score, but they weren’t taken. On the other hand, Brian Baloyi made some telling saves. Impressive in midfield was also Ace Khuse, who still looks sharp.
“The weather didn’t do us any favours,” Nzama reflected on the loss. “We played well in the first half, keeping our positions and being well organised. The heat, however, took its toll in the second half. It’s a pity that we failed to find the back of the net, despite getting numerous opportunities to do so.’
