Kaizer Chiefs will be hoping to defend the Gauteng Football Cup when they take on a winner between Bloemfontein Celtic and University of Pretoria (AmaTuks) on Saturday, 21 July 2013.
The Gauteng Football Cup is part of Gauteng Sports Challenge which was launched in 2012 by Ultimate Sporting Concepts (USC) in partnership with the Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreating and the City of Tshwane Municipality.
The Glamour Boys used the tournament as a launching pad to what became one of Club’s successful seasons in recent years, the 2012/2013 season.
The Glamour Boys beat Moroka Swallows in the first game and went on to beat Bidvest Wits in the final to become inaugural winners of the Gauteng Cup.
This season the format has been changed with two teams playing in the semifinal to meet the champions in the final as compared to two semifinals last year with winners meeting in the finals.
MEC, Lebogang Maile commented; “Our department is proud to be associated with the Gauteng Football Cup. Gauteng is Home of Champions and as such – through this challenge we are also celebrating and honouring sporting excellence in the province.
“This tournament will give fans who are usually starved of diski action during the off season, an opportunity to see the current PSL champs in action following their double triumph. They started this by winning the 2012 Gauteng Cup,” said Maile.
Vina Maphosa said the Glamour Boys will be going out to defend the Gauteng Cup; “We always compete to win and it will not be different this time around. We are the defending champions and it is important that the cup remains in Naturena.
“We are honoured once again to be taking part in this competition and we hope to give the fans something to smile about. Let us go and fill up Loftus Versfeld in what promises to be a thrilling Gauteng Cup once more,” added Maphosa.
Tickets are already on sale at Computicket selling for R35.
