Silver Stars 4 ( Jackson pen 42min, Mashego 59min 90 min+, Mmotong 65min)
Premier Soccer League
Date: 16 November 2005
Olimpia Park Stadium Rustenburg
What started out like a fairytale scripted by Steven Spielberg’s dream studios ended up resembling a piece of work written by famous horror novelist Stephen King, as the Amakhosi lost their first game of the 2005 – 2006 season.
Chiefs started off brightly as they aimed to add further darkness to Silver Stars season which has resembled a theme park roller coaster ride with Louis Agyemang giving Chiefs the early advantage.
It was once again veteran Thabo Mooki who played a role in Chiefs opening goal as his free kick was only parried by Sandilands in the Stars goal and Agyemang punished some poor goalkeeping to put Chiefs ahead.
Having found the back of the net early on Chiefs continued to press for a second with Songwe Chalwe and Shoes Moshoeu linking well but the latter had his back turned to the goal at the wrong moment and was unable to capitalize on the chance laid on for him.
As half time neared Silver Stars were thrown a life line when Rowen Fernandez brought down Stanley Kgatala and Referee Theron pointed to the spot, Silver Stars former Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana defender Willem Jackson duly obliged and levelled matters.
Just after the break Chiefs defender Fabian McCarthy picked up a yellow card, twelve minutes later on 59 minutes he picked up his second yellow card as he pulled back Mashego. From the resultant free kick Mashego pulled Stars level for a second time after Songwe Chalwe had headed Chiefs into the lead on fifty five minutes off a well taken Thabo Mooki corner.
Playing with ten men was always going to be a tough challenge and Stars made their numerical advantage count when substitute Mmotong struck to give his team the lead. Chiefs continued to attack with the best chance falling to Nengomasha whose well struck shot from outside the 18 yard area was kept out by Sandilands, who as the game neared its end produced some match winning saves. Towards the end of the game Chiefs continued attacking looking for the equalizer but were unfortunate when Mashego completed his brace well into injury time as Silver Stars counter attacked and killed off the game.
Chiefs left Rustenburg knowing this was a game they should have won as other front runners in the league race Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns dropped vital points as both teams were held to draws in their respective PSL games on Wednesday evening. Perhaps this news being the only bright star for the Amakhosi on what was an otherwise dim night for Chiefs in Rustenburg.
