Kaizer Chiefs lost on penalties 4-3 in a derby match against arch rivals Orlando Pirates.

The two teams started the match in a typical preseason pace. Pirates were always going to look the more oiled team given the fact that they hardly had a rest during the offseason.

Reyaad Pieterse pulled a good save in the 17th minute when Thamsanqa Gabuza threw a salvo. Thabo Rakhale followed with another curler which Pieterse parried away.

In the 20th minute Pirates were the first to punch a hole through a set piece after Rakhale was foul on the D line. Sifiso Myeni curled a beauty giving Reyaad Pieterse no chance close to the upright.

Chances started falling for Chiefs with Reneilwe "Yeye" Letsholonyane dictating terms from deep in the midfield and his blasted shot went over the bar in the 34th minute.

George Lebese put David Zulu through and the striker missed a chance with one touch too many.

The second half started with a flurry of chances, Siphiwe Tshabalala , Bernard Parker and Yeye threatening to penetrate the Pirates wall.

The fans made their substitutions: Willard Katsande coming on for George Maluleka and Menzi Masuku replacing Lehlohonolo "Major" Majoro.

Steve Komphela brought on Siphelele Mthembu just past the hour-mark, and his first touch was a beautiful flick-on to Yeye, who burst into the box and slotted past Mhlongo to level the scores.

After 90 minutes it was down to penalties. Pirates goalkeeper, Brighton Mhlongo saved Keegan Ritchie and Letsholonyane's spot kicks. Patrick Phungwayo missed for Pirates.

The 4-3 result sees Pirates claiming their 4th Carling Black Label Cup title in 5 years.
