Kaizer Chiefs 0 Santos 1(34. Camara 87’)
Kaizer Chiefs lost their first game of the 2010 – 2011 winner when they went down 1-0 to Santos in an Absa Premiership game at the Rand Stadium in Johannesburg on Wednesday evening. Substitute Sekou Camara scored the game’s only goal in the 87th to see Chiefs lose their unbeaten record for the season.
A quarter of the game had elapsed when Knowledge Musona was hacked down on the edge of the Santos 18 yard area, from the ensuing free kick Siphiwe Tshabalala curled the ball over the wall and the diving Tshepo Motsoeneng and onto the top of the cross bar.
Chiefs were on the offensive two minutes later, Mandla Masango picked out Abia Nale on the left with a delicately chipped ball, Nale sped onto the ball as Motsoeneng came out for him Nale moved wide. By the time he tried sending the ball over to Musona in a central position the Santos keeper had gotten back and managed to intercept the ball.
Santos adopted a highly defensive strategy which at times saw them play with a six man defense, Chiefs though were relentless in attack and a host of players including Nale, Reneilwe Letsholonyane and Musona were unable to find the target as they tried their luck with shots from distance.
Ten minutes after the restart Santos’ Boitumelo Mafoko drove the ball some 20 yards from goal over Itumeleng Khune’s post, on the opposite end a minute later Chiefs had what look like legitimate calls for a penalty turned down when Nale’s intended cross struck the hand of Santos defender Wayne Arendse but the referee did not agree with the calls of the Chiefs players.
Khune was called into action for the first on the hour mark in rather comical circumstances, Gregory Roelf slipped in the Chiefs 18 yard area the ball bounced out to the left where his teammate Mafoko hacked the ball back in towards him the ball bounced on the grounded Roelf’s head and trickled forward to Khune who easily picked up the ball.
Chiefs were creating numerous chances with Letsholonyane causing the most problems, in the 65th minute he forced Motsoeneng into making a save with a powerfully driven shot at goal from inside the 18 yard area.
On 77 minutes George Lebese rolled the ball into the path of Letsholonyane who went for goal with a thunderous shot from around 22 yards from the target, it took a leap in the air from Moetseneng to get his hands to the ball and knock it out for a corner.
Salmaan King squandered a great chance to give Santos the lead when he blasted the ball wide of goal when he found himself in a one on one situation with Khune in the 86th minute.
The visitors stunned the Amakhosi as they found a late winner with three minutes of regulation time remaining, Chiefs failed to effectively deal with a corner from the left which King floated to the opposite end where Musa Otieno headed the ball back across goal. Substitute Camara ran onto the ball and headed it past Khune beating him at his near post to score what proved to be the winning goal.
