Kaizer Chiefs beat Free State Stars 2-0 in an Absa Premiership encounter at Orkney’s James Motlatsi Stadium on Wednesday evening. Willard Katsande, from the penalty spot, and Michelle Katsvairo scored the goals.
Amakhosi coach Steve Komphela decided to start with an unchanged line-up compared to the 2-0 win over Maritzburg United last Saturday.
Chiefs started on a positive note having most of the early possession in the encounter.
It was already early on that Amakhosi created a penalty after Sibusiso Khumalo was brought down in the Free State Stars box. Katsande slotted the ball easily home from the spot in the 10th minute.
Thereafter Ea Lla Kota tried to come back, probably dominating possession although they were not creating any real goal scoring chances.
To be honest, the best opportunity came for Chiefs to extend the lead, when a header of Lorenzo Gordinho, who again had a fine game, just flew over the crossbar.
The second half started like the first finished, with the home side having slightly more of the ball possession. But it didn’t result into any real goal scoring chances.
Instead, it was Amakhosi which extended the lead in the 64th minute when the lively Zimbabwean striker Katsvairo scored his first goal wearing the Gold & Black jersey. It came after a fine through-ball from George Lebese.
The Glamour Boys got some more chances to extend the lead, but it wasn’t to be.
Katande was deservedly selected as the Man of the Match.
Amakhosi have now booked 10 points from five matches, being top of the Absa Premiership log.
Chiefs’ next game is at home against Ajax Cape Town at Durban’s Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday, 15 October 2016 (kick-off at 18:00).
