Coach Middendorp didn’t mince his words when he vowed, “we have to create a winning mentality,” upon the team’s arrival in Cape Town. “We were not aggressive enough in the last match,” referring to the exit from the Telkom Knockout Cup. “We must show more hunger this evening.”
Chiefs lands in the Mother City faced with a challenge of keeping up the momentum in the league. Leading the pack with a convincing run of six wins in a row coming to this fixture against Stellenbosch FC.
“We had some players missing in key positions in the last match,” here the coach refers to the return from suspension of goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi and Willard Katsande. “We played different combinations and after conceding the goal. We tried different options and that was too late to catch up with the opponents.”
There’s also a possible return of Khama Billiat. “We have been observing Khama since his return from national duty,” says Middendorp. “He trained yesterday and looked better than last week. We will monitor him before making a decision on his fitness.”
Still missing will be Mulomowandau Mathoho as he is serving the last of his two-match suspension. Amakhosi welcome back Siyabonga Ngezana from a successful trip in Egypt for the U-23 Afcon tournament with the SA junior national team.
“I don’t have much to say about the opposition,” concludes Middendorp. “Safe to say we must still respect the opponents even if we’re sitting on top of the log. They will be relishing their chances when they watch the weekend situation. We will amend the mistakes from the past games. I don’t treat league and cup games differently.”
The Glamour Boys face Stellies in an Absa Premiership match this evening at Cape Town Stadium. Kick-off is at 19:30.
