Abdallah Azhar won two league titles in France, in 1960 and 1962. The playmaker signed at the age of 18 a contract with Stade Reims in 1958. His teammates were renowned French soccer stars like Raymond Kopa and Just Fontaine. The last one holds the record for the most goals scored in a single World Cup, netting 13 times in 1958.
Later on, Azhar played for Raja Casablanca, becoming a huge fan hero.
The Moroccan soccer legend closely watched Kaizer Chiefs’ training session on Thursday. He also saw the first leg CAF Champions League encounter on television, which Raja won 1-0.
While closely following the training session, the former striker says: “The player with jersey number 6 is great. I like him, he’s a fine passer of the ball and he’s very intelligent.”
Of course, Azhar is talking about the creative midfielder Reneilwe ‘Yeye’ Letsholonyane.
Then, he adds: “Where is Tshabalala?” Sadly, Amakhosi’s midfielder Siphiwe Tshabalala couldn’t join the squad to Casablanca due to dental problems. “He’s an excellent player too.”
“Chiefs have a good team,” Azhar concludes. “It will be an interesting contest tomorrow.”
Raja host Amakhosi for the second leg of this African Champions League encounter at the Stade Mohammed V on Sunday evening. Kick-off is at 19:00 (20:00, South African time).
