Kaizer Chiefs were edged 1-0 by SuperSport United in the second leg of the MTN8 semi-final at FNB Stadium on Saturday night. Bradley Grobler netted the winner for Matsatsantsa in the 58th minute. It means that Amakhosi didn’t reach the MTN8 final.
Ugandan Godfrey Walusimbi made his debut for Kaizer Chiefs, having a fine game at the left-back position. Itumeleng Khune was back in goal, while Wiseman Meyiwa was given a start to play in central midfield.
Both teams started the game a bit tentative, obviously not wanting to concede a goal early on.
SuperSport United got a good opportunity to open the score in the 15th minute, but Clayton Daniels’ header didn’t find the back of the net.
Chiefs’ defence had things otherwise well under control in the first half. Teenage Hadebe did well in his comeback game after having been out due to injury. The lanky defender kept Matsatsantsa striker Bradley Grobler quiet in the first half.
Willard Katsande fought, as usual, hard in his central midfield role, while Siyabonga Ngezana had a fine performance in defence.
Chiefs’ best chance to score came late in the second half, when Katsande steamed forward with the ball at his feet, passed to Leonardo Castro, who gave the ball back to the Zimbabwean. The midfielder’s shot at goal just flew past the wrong side of the post.
The second half started more or less as the first with both sides struggling to get much into the final third of the pitch.
There was a big set-back in the 58th minute when SuperSport United opened the score. Chiefs lost possession of the ball in midfield. The ball was passed to Reneilwe Letsholonyane, who ran forward, entered the left side of the box before passing the ball inside to Bradley Grobler, who went past Teenage Hadebe before slotting the ball past Itumeleng Khune into the goal, 1-0.
That’s when Chiefs started to move more forward looking for the equaliser, which was necessary to reach the final after the first leg had finished in a 2-2 draw.
Giovanni Solinas decided to ring the changes in the 70th minute, bringing on the more creative Khotso Malope for Wiseman Meyiwa.
Slowly, the pressure started to build on the Matsatsantsa defence, getting a few opportunities to find the back of the net.
Siphelele Ntshangase’s fierce shot in the 77th minute just missed the target, but the chances were coming which was a positive.
Meanwhile, Ryan Moon was brought on for Leonardo Castro in the 80th minute. Five minutes later the striker nearly scored with his header but the ball was blocked to a corner.
Chiefs continued to push for the goal, but it didn’t want to come. A 1-0 loss was the result.
