Kaizer Chiefs were knocked out by Ajax Cape Town in a thrilling encounter played in front of a packed Orlando Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The two sides were meeting for the second leg of the MTN8 after Ajax won the first leg at Newlands Stadium.

Ajax were the first to register their name on the score sheet through Brett Evans stunning free kick before Chiefs scored two quick goals through Jose Torrealba and Josta Dladla. A superb strike 85th minute strike sealed the game for Ajax Cape Town after substitute Siphiwe Tshabalala had made the score 3 all in the 80th minute.

Ajax Cape Town went through to the final with 4-3 aggregate with score levelled on 3 all at Orlando.

Vladimir Vermezovic made three changes to the side that lost to Ajax Cape Town last week bringing Jose Torrealba and Nkosinathi Nhleko up front while Josta Dladla was given a midfield role in a 4-4-2 system but it was Ajax who came close opening the score line when Thulani Serero’s shot from close range went just wide of Abel Metsimetsi who came in the place of injured goalkeepers, Itumeleng Khune and Thela Ngobeni.

Minutes later, Brett Evans free kick went just wide as Ajax look to consolidate their 1-0 lead. Then, Nkosinathi “Chippa” Nhleko’s shot went just wide following a superb pass from Nkosinathi Nhleko.

Chiefs paid dearly for conceding a free kick in a dangerous area when Brett Evans curler from 20 yards out beat outstretched Abel Metsimetsi, 1-0 to Ajax in the 11th minute. Jose Torrealba pulled a goal back for the hosts following a superb play from Josta Dladla who won the ball in the middle of the park and found Masango who beat a defender and superbly set up for Jose Torrealba to score his first for the season.

Minute later, Josta Dladla made it 2-1 following a superb run from Nkosinathi Nhleko. Nale should have made it 3-1 when he spotted Hans Vonk out of his line but his effort came off the bar. Jose Torrealba forced Hans Vonk to work as Chiefs searched for a third goal. Referee, Buyile Gqubule awarded Ajax Cape Town a penalty in the 34th minute which Brett Evans converted, 2 all at a packed Orlando Stadium.

Chiefs missed two glorious chances towards the end of the first half, first Torrealba forced a superb save out of Hans Vonk and Chippa Nhleko watched his strike going just wide following a brilliant pass from Abia Nale. Ajax could have wrapped up the game when Brett Evans effort from the spot kick came off the upright after the visitors had been awarded a second penalty, 2 all at half time.

Vladimir Vermezovic introduced winger, Siphiwe Tshabalala who was making his first appearance of the season following a long lay off due to injury. The substitution nearly paid immediate dividends when Ajax defence failed to clear his free kick allowing Ntuka to volley but his shot went just wide.

Mandla Masango missed two glorious chances, first he watched his strike coming off the woodwork following a superb cross from Masenamela and he should have done better minutes later as he ballooned his strike following another brilliant cross from Masenamela.

Substitute Siphiwe Tshabalala who had a superb game after coming on as a substitute score a third goal for the Glamour Boys making it 3-2. The visitors were not finished yet though as Franklin Cale 30 metre drive found the way to the back of Abel Metsimetsi’s net send the young Cape Town side through to the final to be played at a venue to be decided by the cup committee on the 26 of September 2009.

There is not time to recover for Vladimir Vermezovic and his boys as they host Students, Bidvest Wits University here at Orlando Stadium on Wednesday, 26 August 2009.
