Chiefs out to avoid Arrows spearing

On their last trip to the Peter Mokaba Stadium back in May this year the Amakhosi cruised to a 4-0 win over Ajax Cape Town in their penultimate fixture of last season, they will be hoping to once again collect three points when they grace the field at the splendid venue in Polokwane to take on Golden Arrows in an Absa Premiership clash this evening. Kick-Off is at 19:30.

Chiefs head into the game on the back of a goalless draw with Bloemfontein Celtic and are amongst the teams at the top of the standings, although it still is early days the Amakhosi will be aiming to pick up three more points ahead of the looming international break.

For Chiefs coach Vladimir Vermezovic there is some reprieve as the Amakhosi will in all likelihood be able to call on the services of striker Bernard Parker who missed the Celtic game through injury, but midfielder Mandla Masango and defender Dominic Isaacs were unable to make the trip North.

The history

In the past couple of seasons the Amakhosi have managed to hold the upper-hand over Arrows, with Chiefs winning eight of the last ten league clashes between the sides while Arrows managed one victory and another game ended in a draw.

Arrows last league win over Chiefs was in February 2007, since Arrows promotion to the PSL in 2000 – 2001 the teams have clashed 22 times with Chiefs winning 12 of those games. In 11 home games against Arrows Chiefs have picked up 7 wins, while losing two games and drawing two more against Arrows.

Arrows in their earlier years in the PSL were considered somewhat of a bogey team for Chiefs, it was not until the 2005 – 2006 season that Chiefs managed to change their fortunes against them. It was in that campaign that for the first time Chiefs recorded an away win over Arrows and collected home and away victories in a single season against them.

Recent history

Under the tenure of Vladimir Vermezovic the Amakhosi have squared off in four league games with Arrows winning three of these and drawing one, at home they have won both games that they have come up against Arrows in this time. Chiefs are on a good run having also managed to win their last four home league games against Arrows starting in the 2007 - 2008 season.

Current form

Arrows go into the game on the back of five losses in their opening six games, but despite that record the Amakhosi will be well aware that they are playing a wounded team who will be coming out fighting and will need no further motivation as they prepare to face Chiefs.

Chiefs in the meantime would not want to lose ground on the teams ahead of them, having collected 13 points from their opening six games they will be looking to build on that and maintain their good start to the season. Which has seen them win four of their opening six games, with just one draw and a loss, a positive beginning to the season can only be an advantage for Chiefs.
