Kaizer Chiefs Reserves will play Bundesliga side SV Werder Bremen in a training match on Sunday, 6 January 2019. The match will take place at the Randburg Sports Complex at 16:30.
The German side is in South Africa as part of their mid-season training camp to prepare for the second half of the season.
This is not the first time that Kaizer Chiefs have been invited to play a Bundesliga side. In 2015, the Glamour Boys hosted another German side, TSG 1899 Hoffenheim, who were also in the country for their mid-season training camp. The game was played at FNB Stadium.
Werder Bremen’s delegation arrived at the Kaizer Chiefs Village on Thursday afternoon and were welcomed by Chairman Kaizer Motaung. “We are happy to see the delegation led by the club’s CEO Klaus Filbry. We hope they have a memorable stay in South Africa. We are excited about this visit and trust that they will let their counterparts know about our hospitality as South Africans.”
After the meeting, the clubs also exchanged jerseys and the visitors were taken on a tour of the Village.
“We are happy to be here as Bremen and are looking forward to playing against Kaizer Chiefs. We heard a lot about the club and we are impressed with the level of professionalism we’ve seen at the Village,” said Werder Bremen’s CEO, Klaus Filbry.
He confirmed that they travelled with twenty-nine players to South Africa. They are currently in tenth position on the Bundesliga.
Kaizer Chiefs coach Ernst Middendorp also welcomed his fellow countrymen to the Village. He promised that the team would have a competitive training match against our Reserve team who will be guided by coach Arthur Zwane. The team will be joined by eight to ten members of the senior team. The reason for this is that the senior team will be playing a very competitive Absa Premiership match against Sundowns on Saturday afternoon. “We have a good squad, so both teams can expect a high-pressured and competitive game” said Middendorp.
On Saturday, Bremen will also attend the clash of the titans between Chiefs vs Sundowns at FNB Stadium, kicking off at 15:30.
Sunday’s training match will be played behind closed doors and supporters will not be allowed in the venue. The format of the game will be a hundred minutes match, divided into four segments of twenty-five minutes each with 10-minute breaks in between.
The Kaizer Chiefs twitter and Facebook platforms will share live commentary from the venue as well as updates on the match.
