Kaizer Chiefs                       (1) 1 (Mphahlele 39’)

SuperSport United                   0

Kaizer Chiefs beat SuperSport United 1-0 in a Telkom Knockout quarterfinal encounter at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The sole goal in the entertaining match was scored by Ramahlwe Mphalele, who scored a beauty.

George Maluleka returned to the starting XI, replacing Siphelele Ntshangase, who played last weekend’s Soweto Derby.

Chiefs started the game well, nearly already netting the opening goal in the third minute. Dumsani Zuma gave an excellent through ball to Bernard Parker whose shot from just to the left side of goal was saved by SuperSport goalkeeper Ronwen Williams.

There was another good chance for the visitors as well when Aubrey Modiba broke through. Itumeleng Khune took one for the team when handling the ball with his hands outside the box. That happened in the eighth minute. Khune was handed a yellow card for the hands ball.

Chiefs continued to be the better side and Willard Katsande was unlucky to hit the post from inside the box.

The Zimbabwean midfielder got another opportunity to find the back of the net from the penalty spot after Ramahlwe Mphahlele was brought down by Matsatsantsa’s left-back Richard Boateng. But the ball hit the crossbar.

The Glamour Boys did get their goal in the same minute, the 39th, when Mphahlele hit a sitter from outside the right side of the box. The ball flew into the top corner, leaving the goalkeeper no chance. It must surely be an early candidate for goal of the season.

Maluleka had a fine game in midfield, while Katsande, despite his penalty miss, also had a good game. Leonardo Castro worked hard up-front, while Zuma and Parker did well too.

It was a convincing display of Chiefs in the first half and they fully deserved to be 1-0 up at half-time.

SuperSport’s coach Kaitano Tembo tried to change the game by making two substitutions, bringing on Thuso Phala and Evans Rusike for respectively Ghampani Lungu and Reneilwe Letsholonyane.

The result was that the visiting side played a bit better in the second half.

The slight advantage of SuperSport in the second half didn’t mean that they got too many chances to equalise.

Chiefs had the game more or less under control and their fine performance led to the 1-0 win and, as a consequence, reached the next round of the Telkom Knockout.

Key moment in the match:

That must be the goal Ramahlwe Mphahlele scored in the 39th minute. It was an absolute scorcher and lifted the spirit of the team.

Most Valuable Player (MVP):

Willard Katsande and George Maluleka were excellent in the first half, although the latter faded somewhat in the second half. Bernard Parker made several clever runs, while Dumsani Zuma looked dangerous whenever in possession of the ball. Ramahlwe Mphahlele had a good game and, as a cherry on top, he fired that absolute missile on goal in the 39th minute, which resulted in 1-0. It was also the left-back who was selected as the Man of the Match.
