Traditionally the Macufe Cup is the swansong event that brings to a close the Annual Mangaung Africa Cultural Festival (Macufe) which takes place in Bloemfontein.
The Amakhosi have been successful in this competition leaving the Free State victorious in 2004, 2005 and 2009, for the most part this game is played during dates set aside by FIFA for international matches, which means that both teams usually have a different look about them.
The chance to play in a Cup Final as well as the good natured rivalry between Chiefs and Celtic means that this game is treated not as an exhibition game but as a chance for players to show case their credentials and try to establish themselves as regulars.
Last year Chiefs ran rampant against Celtic with Knowledge Musona scoring a hat trick, and the Macufe Cup was the launch pad for the deadly striker to establish a name for himself. While Musona is unavailable for the game as he is away on international duty with the Zimbabwe national team with another eleven Chiefs players are away on international duty.
The absence of these players opens up the opportunity for others to step up and grab the opportunity which will come their by giving their all in a game which is regarded as an exhibition match but has the intensity and edge of a regular cup final.
With Celtic still smarting over having lost out to Chiefs last year as well as the fact that the Amakhosi have defeated them in official competition twice this season, in the MTN 8 and the Absa Premiership the hosts will be looking to get one back over Chiefs.
The Amakhosi’s recent wins over Celtic will be a source of inspiration for them, which they will use to help them record their third win in recent months over Celtic, and what will be with it their fourth Macufe Cup Triumph.
