"As it will be the first time since 1994 and also the first time since the inception of the PSL in 1996 that the teams will be meeting in a cup competition, there is lots of history to be made in this game and in the Telkom Cup in general for us this season,” added Vermezovic.
The Chiefs coach was informed by kaizerchiefs.com that the Amakhosi have twice before lost in a cup to a team coached by current Amazulu coach Manqoba Mngqithi, when he was in his previous tenure as coach of Golden Arrows.
Jokingly, Vermezovic retorted: “I think it is time for us to change that statistic”. The Amakhosi coach, on a more serious note, said of Saturday evening's encounter: “They might not have started the season well but Amazulu have gotten better in recent games. This will be a tough game. If I look at my team I would say that we have been getting better with each game which is a good sign.”
As Chiefs head to Durban, Vermezovic does not forsee any problems with the Amakhosi playing at the spectacular Moses Mabhida Stadium. “We like to play at the Moses Mabhida Stadium, we generally do well there.”
Chiefs, who lifted the Telkom Cup in April when they defeated Ajax Cape Town at the Absa Stadium in Durban, which is across the road from the Moses Mabhida Stadium, could be the first team to win the Telkom Cup twice in one year.
Vermezovic, in concluding his discussion with kaizerchiefs.com, believes it will be a big task for them to do so. “It is more difficult to retain a title than to win it for the first time. We will give it our best. There is extra incentive as it will be nice for us to win two Telkom Cup titles in the same year.”
