Kaizer Chiefs will renew their rivalry in African club competition with Angolan teams when they host Petro de Luanda at FNB Stadium in their third Group C game of the 2020-21 CAF Champions League group stages on Saturday. Both Chiefs and Petro are still searching for their first win in the group stages. Chiefs will be hoping though that history will repeat itself and that they will continue their good run against Angolan sides in African club competitions.
Chiefs have already faced Angolan opponents in the CAF Champions League this season when they eliminated Primeiro de Agosto in the first round - drawing the first leg 0-0 against them at home before a 1-0 win away in Luanda as Chiefs progressed to the group stages for the first time. Amakhosi’s finest hour in continental competition came against Angolan opponents in the form of Inter Clube Luanda, who they defeated 2-1 on aggregate in the 2001 CAF Cup Winners Cup final.
While Chiefs are undefeated in four previous meetings in African club competition against Angolan clubs, with two wins and two draws, Petro have had indifferent results when facing South African clubs in continental action. Their first game against DStv Premiership opponents was against Sundowns in the 2001 CAF Champions League semi-finals. Each team won their home leg 2-0. With Petro winning the second, it meant the game went to a penalty shoot-out which Sundowns won 5-3.
Their other clash against South African opposition came in the 2013 CAF Confederation Cup first round when they met a SuperSport team coached by Gavin Hunt. The current Chiefs coach ensured that his Matsasantsa team earned a 0-0 draw in the away first leg. They then came back to South African and won 2-0 to progress to the second round.
Chiefs will be targeting their first win of the group stages after starting with a draw and a loss, while Petro have lost their first two games. This tie is vital for both sides as they look to get back into the race to qualify for the quarterfinals. The match will be played without fans in keeping with Coronavirus safety measures and will kick off at 18:00 on Saturday 6 March. Petro will become the third different Angolan team that Chiefs will be facing in African club competition.
