Match Report: Chiefs Reserve lose it narrowly

Kaizer Chiefs Reserves allowed Mamelodi Sundowns Reserves to win a tight Asidlali encounter at King Zwelithini Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Amakhosi dominated the proceedings in patches, but it was in the 33rd minute when Samuel Julies sneaked in with header to win it for the Brazilians.

Coach Arthur Zwane and his lads were left to rue the missed chances, especially in the early stages of this fierce contest.

“It would have been nice to have won it,” Zwane reflected on the game. “I'm very disappointed. We didn't show consistency in our play.”

If Chiefs would have the clash, this would have given the Glamour Boys a chance to go toe to toe with Sundowns and Bloemfontein Celtic in the final round of the MultiChoice Diski Challenge (MDC) fixtures to decide the league’s winner.

Sensing defeat, coach Zwane made a couple of changes during the match. Pulling out Tshidiso Monamodi (46th) and bringing on Yusuf Bunting to strengthen his striking force, while Solomon Khopotse came on for Mpho Khumalo in the 68th minute.

“We missed some of the influential players,” Zwane commented. “Siyabonga Ngezana, Itumeleng Shopane, Nkosingiphile Ngcobo and Wiseman Meyiwa are with South Africa’s Under-20s side. They are influential but at least we gave the other chaps a chance to test their performances.”

Chiefs face SuperSport United in the final MDC round in two weeks’ time.

It was good to see Daniel Cardoso and Siyanda Xulu manning the central defence and Keagan Buchanan in charge of the middle of the park. With first team coach Steve Komphela watching from the stands, this could be what the doctor ordered for match fitness of his first team players.
